Since I really liked my Fender Telecaster I started to search for others and ended up with three different Fender Telecaster. This one is great, it has a few battle scars and the frets are a bit low but that just builds character. All three of these Telecasters have a pretty chunky neck, something I love. They are around mm on the first fret and about mm on the 12th, not bad for a Telecaster. Unfortunately they weigh like a Les Paul, around As soon as I get the new flat in order I will make some videos of all three to compare them.
1963-1966 Magnatone Custom Series Dating
The Super Reverb can be really loud and even interfer with the bass guitar. Just two speakers are enabled 4 ohms with a 65 Super Reverb having tremolo disconnect mod and V1 tube pulled out. These tubes have different frequency responses than 12AX7, particurlarly when distorting. People describe these tubes to have less harsh and buzzy distortion. This mod does not alter the tone significantly when amp is played clean or when only the power amp section distorts.
It is so easy to enable and disable that it can hardly be called a mod.

E-H talking pedal I just earlier this evening found out that what I thought was a talking pedal was actually called a Golden Throat. What does a talking pedal do, and how does it work? Is it the same thing as a Golden Throat? They are completely different. The golden throat is a “talk box” like Frampton, Walsh, etc used. It is a speaker driver connected to a tube which goes in your mouth and needs to be miked through a PA to be used. Your mouth acts as a filter. The Talking pedal is like a big wah wah pedal, but instead of saying “WAH” it says “eee aaaa iiii oooo uuuu” when it is moved, the vowel sounds.
It goes in the path between the guitar and amp, much more useable than a talk box. But the talk box can make more different sounds. In the Bad Stone I can’t switch back and forth from auto to manual. Once I get it to be auto on the effect if I jar it too much it goes to manual so I have to jiggle the switch a bit. On the Big Muff I can’t get it to go to tone bypass very often, when you switch it, it just loses all signal.

This list is circa , and some codes have been reassigned or added since that time. Code formats were not completely standardized, but a little deciphering will generally yield the info of interest. Note that many makers also stamped OEM Original Eqipment Manufacturer part numbers above or below the EIA code, in some cases parts makers or the customer elected not to include the EIA codes, so not all parts have them. What is potentiometer taper? Potentiometer taper is the relation between the position and the resistance of a pot. In the majority of variable resistors available this is a linear relationship, meaning that the relative position is equal to the resistance ratio. For example when the potmeter is at the middle position, the output voltage is half of the full voltage over the potentiometer.
For some applications and especially audio volume control, non-linear, logarithmic tapers are used. Definition Taper is the relation between the position of the potentiometer and the resistance ratio. Types The simple linear taper is the most common form, when we plot the position against the resistance ratio we can visualize the different position-resistance relations. The graph below shows the most used tapers.
The first and last few percents of travel are often only mechanical with no change in resistance. Audio taper The most used non-linear taper is the logarithmic log or audio taper.

These are an invaluable tool for dating vintage Gibson Instruments. The Gibson serial number system can be very difficult to interpret to say the least – whilst the pot codes had a simple system in which the date of manufacture was encoded into the numbers stamped into the casing.

Dating of Navigators to the exact year of production is very difficult, some have no markings, some have serial numbers which mean nothing, or have not been codes can help sometimes so my dating is estimated for most models of LP.
Once decoded, the writing on the back or sides can be very informative If you’ve been reading articles about dating a vintage guitar, you may well have come across mention of pot codes. The pots, or potentiometers to give their full name, are the variable resistors that control volume and tone. Better quality pots are often stamped with a number of codes; typically part numbers, date of production, manufacturers codes and resistance values. Many pots don’t carry all of this information, but the better quality guitars produced in America regularly do.
So where are these codes? Normally they are stamped or inked onto the back or sides of the pot. So reading them will require opening control cavities, removing scratchplates, or in the case of a semi acoustic, removing the pots entirely. Codes can be worn, obscurred by solder and other components, or simply very small. Finding them is not always easy; this is obviously not something for the faint-hearted, but once performed a few times, nowhere near as daunting as it might at first seem.
There are many exceptions and variations to the general rules described below, some of which are highlighted in the examples at the end. Part numbers Many pots do not have part numbers, but the larger guitar manufacturers did list pots by part number in their spare parts manuals. POT CODES – All vintage USA Big Muffs have source-date codes stamped on the underside of the potentiometer cans, or “pots”. The pots are what the knobs are mounted to, essentally manually adjustable resisitors that control the voltage across a circuit.

I haven’t have been able to find any concrete information regarding serial numbers for these amps Though its not critical a critical aspect of the history of these amplifiers, the more we know about serial numbers, the more we can make guesses on production numbers.
Early Custom Nuances Early Custom’s were build without the interlock switches, although the interlock was on the schematic inside the amp. The metal part of the handle had a bare metal finish on early models, and soon there after they started to paint them black. Also, the badge plates were different on the very early Customs, eventually they were produced with the large “M” below right.
