On the wet sand right this does not happen. The Egyptians moistened the sand over which the sledge moved. By using the right quantity of water they could halve the number of workers needed. The researchers published this discovery online on 29 April in Physical Review Letters. For the construction of the pyramids, the ancient Egyptians had to transport heavy blocks of stone and large statues across the desert. The Egyptians therefore placed the heavy objects on a sledge that workers pulled over the sand. Research from the University of Amsterdam has now revealed that the Egyptians probably made the desert sand in front of the sledge wet. Experiments have demonstrated that the correct amount of dampness in the sand halves the pulling force required.

Every part of the tree has been designed — presumably by Mother Nature while she was dating Satan to piss off her parents — to kill humans in the most horrifying ways possible. You don’t get it. Continue Reading Below Advertisement Officially dubbed the “most dangerous tree” by Guinness World Records, the slightest bit of contact with manchineel’s sap leaves its victims covered in blisters, and can even render one blind if it gets in their eyes.
And that’s just the sap. It’s delicious-looking, tiny apple-like fruits can cause excruciatingly painful oral swelling, enlargement of the lymph nodes, bleeding in the throat, problems with breathing, and even death. In addition, standing underneath the tree while it’s raining can be enough to make you break out in blisters.
And if you try to burn it, the tree will produce toxic smoke that causes blindness. That sign seems awfully close to the tree. There are even accounts that Ponce de Leon was killed by an arrow poisoned with the sap of a manchineel while searching for the Fountain of Youth. In conclusion, this plant could not be a bigger “Fuck you” to humans even if it literally grew into the shape of a giant hand with an extended middle finger. The Puya is basically a real-life version of the carnivorous monster plant from Little Shop Of Horrors.
Only it’s way more horrifying, because unlike Audrey II, this mean green mother from Chile is patient. That is, if you have the time. And once they are entangled in the organic barbwire, there is no getting out of it.

Aboriginal history[ edit ] Newcastle and the lower Hunter Region were traditionally occupied by the Awabakal and Worimi Aboriginal People, who called the area Malubimba. Shortland entered what he later described as “a very fine river”, which he named after New South Wales’ Governor John Hunter. Over the next two years, coal mined from the area was the New South Wales colony’s first export.
Philip Gidley King , the Governor of New South Wales from , decided on a more positive approach to exploit the now obvious natural resources of the Hunter Valley. In the same year, the first shipment of coal was dispatched to Sydney. This settlement closed less than a year later. A settlement was again attempted in , as a place of secondary punishment for unruly convicts. The settlement was named Coal River, also Kingstown and then renamed Newcastle, after England’s famous coal port.
The link with Newcastle upon Tyne , England its namesake and also whence many of the 19th century coal miners came, is still obvious in some of the place-names — such as Jesmond , Hexham , Wickham , Wallsend and Gateshead. Under Captain James Wallis, commandant from to , the convicts’ conditions improved, and a building boom began.
Captain Wallis laid out the streets of the town, built the first church of the site of the present Christ Church Anglican Cathedral , erected the old gaol on the seashore, and began work on the breakwater which now joins Nobbys Head to the mainland. The quality of these first buildings was poor, and only a much reinforced breakwater survives. During this period, in , the oldest public school in Australia was built in East Newcastle.
There, convicts were sent to burn oyster shells for making lime.

The new goldfield turned Queensland into a significant gold producer, contributing much needed finances to the young colony. Thousands of people arrived at the Gympie goldfield in the months after the discovery and a fledgling settlement emerged. In a year the alluvial gold had been exhausted and shallow reef mining commenced. With the change to deep reef mining from , came the need for extensive capital investment through the formation of companies using foreign as well as local capital.
During , mines began yielding large amounts of gold, marking a new era of wealth and prosperity for Gympie as an intensive phase of underground reef mining began, facilitated by the injection of capital into mining companies for machinery and employees. A gold rush from the late s brought rapid growth and grand buildings in what soon proved to be a flood-prone main street. Fine mansions sprouted on the flood-free hill tops, but the lower part of the main street is still inundated from time to time. A few weeks later he found more gold in a small watercourse known by pastoral employees and cedar cutters as Gympie Creek.
Station Homestead Booubyjan Homestead Booubyjan Homestead is situated on a acre run in the Kilkivan area, about 14km north of the small town of Tansey, which is north of Goomeri. The homestead is on an elevated section of the run, allowing comprehensive views of the surrounding run. The complex consists of timber buildings, linked by open verandahs and covered walkways. Three principal buildings facing north east comprise the residence, with various outbuildings to the south and west of these.
The one storeyed building located centrally in the complex, the largest of the buildings, is referred to as the Homestead. This building, which is elevated on timber stumps, is of drop slab timber construction, although the front of the building has been faced with horizontal timber weatherboards. The hipped corrugated iron roof is centrally pierced with a brick chimney shaft, with simple brick corbelling and chimney hood. Verandahs surround the building although these have been infilled and altered to the south west or rear of the building.
Access is provided to the verandah via a centrally located open tread timber stair, which is emphasised with a planted trellis. Four half glazed french doors with transom lights above open from the homestead to the front verandah, and similar doors open on the north western and south eastern sides of the building. The corrugated iron verandah awning is supported on chamfered timber posts, and the soffit is clad with fibrous cement sheeting to the north west of the building.
Internally, the Homestead is divided into three principal rooms, to which the french doors provide access. These rooms are internally clad with fibrous cement sheeting braced with timber strips.
